CAUAYAN CITY CELEBRATES FIRST SMARTER CITY DAY
A historical event took place as the City of Cauayan celebrated the first Smarter and Sustainable City Day on March 25, 2022.
Various activities were undertaken with the Hon. Professor Fortunato T. dela Peña, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the same government agency that declared Cauayan City as the First Smarter City in the Philippines.
The celebration kicked-off with the Hybrid Hackathon sponsored by Impact Hub-Manila with the CEO and Co-founder, program manager, Germaine de Runa, in partnership with the City Government of Cauayan, Isabela State University, and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region II.
The 2-day hybrid Impact Hackathon run virtually on site at FL Dy Coliseum Cauayan City and attended by IT students from different colleges in the city and a more than 500 IT programmers online participants nationwide.
This event highlights the determination of the city government to contagiously forge stronger partnerships with both local and international agencies and involve the whole community in solving the different problems confronting the city, particularly on agriculture and Food Security, Health, Education, Energy, Climate Change, Pollution, Waste Management, and Transportation.

After the opening program of the Impact Hackaton, Mayor Bernard Dy together with Secretary Fortunato Dela Pena, inaugurated the newly constructed SDG Building at Isabela State University- Cauayan.
The blessing of the first SDG Center in the Philippines is made possible through the collaboration by LGU Cauayan City, Isabela State University, the Department of Science and Technology, United Cities, and U4SSC.
The UN SDG Center shall serve as the center of excellence in glocalizing the UNSDG’s by providing facility and co-working spaces for trainings and technical sservices to promote and strengthen the implementation of the goals, not only in the City of Cauayan but in the entire Cagayan Valley Region. The UN SDG Center is located at Isabela State University-Cauayan Campus.
Cauayan City took the lead in localizing the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals when it was launched in the year 2016.
The celebration culminated with a program at Isabela Convention Center with the invited Keynote Speaker , DOST Secretary Prof. Fortunato dela Pena where he lauded the leadership of Mayor Bernard Dy and the Isabela State University family headed by President Ricmar Aquino for the many programs and partnerships implemented as a Smarter and Sustainable City and SDG-engaged University.
