The City Nutrition Committee and GAD Focal Point System is now in its fourth year in our movement in sustaining Home and Community Food Production through the Search for BEST COMMUNAL GARDEN with the theme “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat Na Nutrisyon Aanihin” It highlights the significance of food security in the countryside which is considered as the basic constraint in obtaining and maintaining good nutrition in all ages. Nutritional Balance can be achieved through   sufficient source of food supply especially raised from backyard gardens, therefore, promotes sustainable vegetable gardening and High Value Commercial Crops (HVCC) projects in the community, home and school in support to the governments’ Sustainable Development Goals for Health and Nutrition.

The campaign aims to create responsiveness of every house holds on the significance of Food Security in ensuring Good Health and Nutrition.

Specific Objectives:

1. Increase sensitivity on the significance of establishment and maintenance  community food production projects; e.g communal gardens, backyard gardens, (urban and rural gardening techniques) to guarantee  safe, accessible, sufficient and affordable food source for the table of every Filipino  Family; 
2. To promote collaboration among various stakeholders both at the national and local levels for programs supporting community, home  and school garden(Gulayan sa Paaralan);
3. Advocate for the enactment of national and local legislation/ policies supportive of an increased investment in the culture of various food crops/vegetable gardening and High Value  Commercial Crops Production with Package of Technologies  to enable scaling up of nourishment and related interventions for a sustainable Health and Nutrition Development Program.

1. Entries/Contestants: Vegetable Gardens (communal project) :
2. Size :  at least 100 sq.meters and above;
3. Location: area near residence;
4. Contain a High Diversity of Plants ( legumes,  Green leafy vegetables, High Source of MicroNutrients (Vit. A, C and B) eg. Ampalaya, squash, horseradish, mustard, tomato,
5. kangkong,gabi,pechay,patola,winged bean, pole and bush sitaw, upo, okra and eggplant;
6. Production system that the poor can easily enter at some level/low input cost;
7.  Usage of Open Pollinated Varieties, and other indigenous cultivar, e.g. Alugbati, Kamote, gabi, amaranth, pal-lang, parda, patani, sigarillas )
8. Showcase Organically Grown veg. /Integrated Pest Management (organic fertilizer and  organic pesticides);
9. Production; Volume for food consumption and as additional source of income as well as number of beneficiaries of seeds produced from the Communal Garden (recorded/documented);
10. The Best Purok Garden from each Barangay will be the official entry for the contest.
11. Purok Gardens will be maintained as source  of cuttings, tubers etc. and OPV vegetable seeds to be distributed to households for their  backyard garden and vegetable in container project.
12. For this contest, the CNC evaluators will be choosing TEN (10) BEST COMMUNAL GARDENS.
13. TWO (2) Citations will also be given to Best Communal Gardens Showcasing Urban Vegetable Production.
14. Winners will be declared after the final round and consequently, awarding ceremonies will be by barangays (winners).
